Paper Weaving at Elizabeth Gaskell’s House

August 2025

As Part of Elizabeth Gaskell House’s summer of fun in 2025, I ran a family-friendly paper weaving workshop using patterns and artefacts from around the house.

I created an instructions & pattern book with some historical context for why participants were weaving and how it linked to Elizabeth Gaskell’s life and written works.

Lovely activity and calm lovely Eleanor leading it

The workshops ran over two days and I was excited to see how ambitious many of the participants were and attempted some of the more complicated weave structures!

Playing with colour, texture and pattern was also a big part of the workshop and we found that each weave was really individual and everybody was able to take home a unique artwork for themselves!

You can find what else is on at Elizabeth Gaskell’s House HERE.

[The Children] learned the weaving technique. Eleanor is very patient.
