From Ancient Egypt to 19th Century Macclesfield:
Using Hieroglyphs to tell the stories of Silk Weavers at Paradise Mill
One of key aims for this project was to unite the collections from the Silk Museum and Paradise Mill, reflecting on the narratives from both the Egyptian collection and those of the silk weavers up in the mill.
I wanted my exhibition and collection of woven samples and products to reflect the overall experience of visiting the Museum..

Although the 19th Century fascination with Ancient Egypt has led to an increased effort to preserve and protect ancient artefacts, sharing knowledge and keeping historical interest alive, it is important to recognise the colonial aspects of this research and acknowledge the damage caused to Egyptian locals during British occupation during the Anglo-Egyptian War in July–September 1882.
As we continue to cherish and preserve the Egyptian artefacts donated to the museum, as part of this exhibition we are offering visitors the option to also donate to the Egyptian Food Bank, which for over 20 years, has been combating the issue of hunger in various parts of Egypt.
The Egyptian food bank reaches 450,000 families monthly across Egypt and as well as providing food for families in need, also work towards ending food waste in the region.
