East Cheshire Eye Society at Paradise Mill

August 2025

The second workshop I ran at Paradise Mill was with East Cheshire Eye Society.

East Cheshire Eye Society was originally formed in 1875 (150 years before we ran this workshop!) as a way for silk workers in mills such as Paradise Mill in Macclesfield to learn skills and improve their quality of life if they lost their eyesight and were unable to work with silk any longer.

We started with another sensory activity in which participants felt my woven samples from my residency, as well as some chunkier, more tactile samples I had created,

Participants used cardboard frames in different colours to suit their needs and started weaving using a range of materials.

It was really interested to hear about the participant’s creative skills and knowledge of local history.
